The initiative will encourage users to start community pages for brands, entertainers, and politicians rather than unofficial fan pages, which have been a source of some confusion on the site.

Big brands that have seen their official Facebook fan numbers hindered by third-party fan pages will likely welcome the move. For instance, even Coca-Cola - with its Facebook-leading 5.3 million fans - stands to benefit. A Facebook search query for Coca-Cola produces more than 500 fan page results, and some have been started by individuals who have accrued thousands of fans of the beverage company. There's the five-month-old fan page, "Coca-Cola In A Glass Bottle Is Way Better Than Plastic," which has built up a following of nearly 400,000.

To read the rest of this intresting article written by Christopher Heine at ClickZ click HERE.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://semiproblog.blogspot.com/2010/04/facebook-chooses-likes-over-fans.html' title='Facebook chooses "Likes" Facebook removed without telling us, so we made a video. Here's the quote from our website.
_________________________________________________________________________________

So here is what happened. We, Fat Atom Internet Marketing (fatatom.com), did a Facebook fan page for one of our clients. The site took off like a rocket, hit almost 50,000 fans, and then we wake up one day to find Facebook had taken the page down. They sent no warning, had already validated our page, and offered no explanation later. We sent support requests to Facebook for almost 2 weeks, everyday, afterward, and they have yet to get back with us. Thousands of dollars were spent on this campaign, and now they are all gone.

We think it is very irresponsible of Facebook, who is still young in the professional world, to treat paying customers like this. Facebook is a great place to grow your business online, but behavior like this is downright terrifying. Business need to have confidence that they are safe investing money in Facebook.

We created this video to express our frustration and confusion.

If you have had this happen to you, please leave a comment and help us spread this video around the web!

Fat Atom Internet Marketing
http://fatatom.com

Using Facebook and Twitter safely

By Elinor Mills of cnet.com

You and just about everyone else, it seems, are spending more and more time on Facebook and Twitter, updating statuses and checking friends' tweets. That's all well and good, of course, but the amount of personal information that all of you share in real time, and the level of trust implicit with the social networking sites, do pose particular security and privacy problems.

A recent study from Sophos found that Facebook users reveal a lot of personal information to new friends, including ones they really don't even know or have never met. Using fake profiles, Sophos sent out friend requests to 100 random Facebook users, and more than 40 percent blindly accepted, giving the company access to birth dates, e-mail addresses, phone number and addresses--private information strangers shouldn't have.

The openness of Twitter--anyone can follow anyone else, and posts are indexed in search engines--makes it a nirvana for spammers. Kaspersky says there are nearly 500,000 new unique URLs that appear in Twitter posts daily, and of those, anywhere between 100 and 1,000 are malware attacks.

Here's a look at some of the specific threats users of the sites face and what they can do about it.

Check out the rest of this great article here.

Social Media Marketing 101 (Top Five Reasons for having a Facebook Fan Page)

From Todd "The Brawn" Muffley at Fat Atom Internet Marketing.

Let's all decide right now that we should not just jump on the social media bandwagon because we can, but because we have a plan. An easy and effective plan, i.e., one that you will actually implement and upkeep, is usually a good place to start. Let's discuss Facebook Fan Pages and how this can help you grow your business.

Facebook, for those of you stuck in 2003, is a place where you can go online, set up a profile (put stuff in about you) and then find friends with whom you went to elementary school and show them pictures of your pets, kids, trophy spouse, etc.

The Fan Page on Facebook allows, let's say, business owners, to set up a page about their business and then invite people to "become a fan" of that business. Usually at this point, some people are saying to themselves, "Why?". So let me tell you my...

Top Five Reasons for having a Facebook Fan Page:

1. A Facebook Fan Page allows the approximately 175 million Facebook users to learn about your products and/ or services - free of charge.

2. A Facebook Fan Page allows you to control the conversation about your business. It allows you to push relevant content to people who want to see it, even ask for it, free of charge.

3. It is estimated for every Fan you have, 10 more people will be exposed to your messaging. 1=10, 10=100, 250=2500 - and yes, it is still free of charge.

4. Facebook allows you to leverage your clients to help you get new clients by running clever promotions, giveaways or specials.

5. When people "Fan" your Facebook Page, and your Facebook Page has a link to your site, you are building the incoming link traffic to your website. That helps your rankings with Google and other search engines.

Remember, before you run and start a Facebook Fan Page for your business, think about a plan first. Creating a marketing calendar that helps you plan events, set goals and manage to-do's is your first priority. No marketing, even when it is free, is good if you don't execute properly and Facebook is no different. These creative philanthropists will continue to play a role in shaping the charitable sector.

A More Detailed Exploration:
Thankfully, it doesn’t take a special certification to do something for a cause. It just takes a desire to make a difference and the willingness to act.

While many non-profit leaders and fundraisers deliberate how to integrate online and social media into their operations, a new group of people are showing them how it can be done. The only question in my mind is: Are they even watching?

Click here to read the rest.

Welcoming the Creative Class
As the knowledge economy continues to grow, the importance of the creative class does, too. According to the economist and social scientist Richard Florida, “the Creative Class is a class of workers whose job is to create meaningful new forms.” He contends that this is an emergent demographic playing an important role in spurring innovation and economic growth.

With the velocity of change increasing because of the intimacy and immediacy demanded of the Interconnected Age, every sector of the economy needs to attract and engage creative thinkers and doers to help them stay relevant to the marketplace. That goes for philanthropy, too.

What is Creative Philanthropy?
Creative philanthropy is the innovative use of media and technology to raise awareness and money for charitable organizations, most often by individuals coming from outside the non-profit sector. While it’s possible for it to occur within existing non-profit organizations, most of them do not have the structure or culture to cultivate it.

As Peter Panapento and I discussed in this recent Chronicle of Philanthropy podcast, creative philanthropists are adept at online and social media and use them as the natural extension of their concern for a specific issue or cause. They see a problem, craft a solution using media and technology, and deploy it with often nothing more than a website and social media accounts.

Examples of Creative Philanthropy
To help illustrate the concept, here are two examples of Creative Philanthropy:

Blame Drew’s Cancer
About six months ago, Drew Olanoff found out the lump on the side of his neck was cancerous. Within days of his diagnosis, Drew launched the website www.blamedrewscancer.com and asked for everyone to help him take down cancer. The idea was intentionally simple – use Twitter to blame cancer for anything that goes wrong. If you get a flat tire, just tweet out what happened and use the hashtag #blamedrewscancer.

When he launched, he did not have a non-profit partner or any corporate sponsors. But he did promise that he would find them, which he has since fulfilled. Drew’s aligned his efforts with the Livestrong Foundation, partnered with 23andme.com, and now is collaborating with Drew Carey of television fame.

Earlier this fall, Drew announced that he would be auctioning off his lucrative Twitter handle, @drew, to the highest bidder with 100% of the proceeds to benefit the Livestrong Foundation. With a number of celebrities named Drew, Olanoff thought at least one of them would step forward and perhaps buy it for a few thousand dollars. That was until Drew Carey (@DrewfromTV) stepped forward and pledged $25,000. Then, he upped the ante to $100,000 if at least 100,000 followed him on Twitter. Shortly after, he raised the stakes again and said he would donate $1 for every Twitter follower he has on December 31, 2009 – up to $1 million.

Not bad for a guy who just finished his final round of chemotherapy.

As the host of the widely popular Price is Right and a beloved television star, Drew Carey doesn’t need this to grow his Twitter follower base. Instead, he’s decided to use his celebrity to help shine a light on a worthy cause and help a creative philanthropist achieve his goal. If you haven’t already, you can help by following him on Twitter here or by visiting www.milliondollardrew.com, a site launched to promote this yearend drive.

Tweetsgiving
Last year during the week of Thanksgiving, Stacey Monk launched Tweetsgiving only six days after she and her team at Epic Change came up with the idea. Epic Change is a non-profit organization that was founded after a life-changing trip Stacey took in 2007 to Africa, where she witnessed the enormity of abject poverty. This experience inspired her to leave her career as a management consultant and devote her energies to helping fund entrepreneurs in developing countries.

Over the past year, I have had the pleasure to get to know Stacey personally and professionally. She is a great standard bearer for Creative Philanthropy.

Here’s a quick summary of what she led, as taken from the Tweetsgiving website:

Epic Change launched the original TweetsGiving celebration in November 2008 as a 48-hour celebration of gratitude and giving that successfully raised over $10,000 to build a classroom in Arusha, Tanzania. Imagined and built entirely by volunteers in six days, TweetsGiving was launched 2 days before the US Thanksgiving holiday, and quickly became the #1 trending topic on Twitter as thousands of grateful tweets from across the globe filled the stream, and hundreds of blogs, from Mashable to VentureBeat, spread the story. (Click here and here to see additional metrics.)

Epic Change invested the funds to build a classroom at a school founded by Tanzanian Epic Change fellow “Mama Lucy” Kamptoni, a woman who used to sell chickens and used her income to build a school that now serves over 300 children near her home in Arusha. In this classroom built from gratitude, the Twitter handles of donors are now painted on the walls.

Over the past year, Stacey and her team have followed up their fundraising efforts with a series of impact stories about the Fifth Graders now learning in that classroom. Just recently, they outfitted Mama Lucy with her own Twitter account (@MamaLucy), started the hashtag #TwitterKids, and created a Twitter list for people to connect with the class directly.

Having much more lead time this year, Stacey and her team are on the verge of launching Tweetsgiving 2009, another 48-hour celebration. This time around, they have organized groups of people from different cities from across the world to help promote the drive through a combination of online and in-person events.

Be sure to watch for the flurry of gratitude on Twitter starting at 12 noon ET on Tuesday, November 24. Or, find an event near you and join in the holiday festivities. And, don’t forget to share your gratitude with others.

So, What Do You Have to Say?
Now that I’ve said my piece, what do you think? What are other examples of Creative Philanthropy? Can Creative Philanthropy happen within existing non-profits?

How Kiva.org is Improving The World By Using Social Media

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; podcast from HowStuffWorks.com and first came to hear of Kiva.org through their episode on micro-lending. For those unfamiliar, micro-lending is the loaning of very small amounts of money at low interest, especially to start-up companies or self-employed people. During the episode, the topic of Kiva came up. I was extremely intrigued by the idea and signed up. In the time it has existed Kiva has had such an effect on the world not only in what they accomplish, but how they accomplish it that I wanted to share.

Kiva.org is a non-profit organization that supplies micro-loans to entrepreneurs around the world (mostly under-developed countries in South America, Asia and Africa) to help them get a leg up and find success. Kiva achieves this by finding people like you and me to fund these loans.

Once you become a Kiva member you look through lists of entrepreneurs that are in need of a loan and find a person you want to help support. You can then provide as little as $25 to the person or people running the business. Together with funds from other Kiva.org members a group micro-loan is created to send to the entrepreneurs. As the business you support grows and profits the loan is repaid. Now you have the choice of taking back the money you originally funded OR immediately reinvesting it in another business!

Ok now here is where the awesome social media side of Kiva comes in.

Kiva has what are called "Lending Teams". Whenever you loan money you can contribute it towards a total loan score for the Kiva Lending Team of your choice! This creates an air of friendly competition between lenders to fund more money than rival teams. This element makes loaning absolutely addictive.

Members can post messages to lending team message boards, talk with other members, get lending banners to put on other websites (like the one on the left of this page), create a customizable Lender Page and read updates from the field agencies that have direct contact with the entrepreneurs. There is definitely a sense of joy when you read how these loans have immensely helped these hard working individuals.

Head over to Kiva.org to sign up and start loaning! You will love it.

Note worthy links.
Kiva's Twitter page
The How Stuff Works Twitter page
The Stuff You Should Know Lending Team

Viral Social Media tips from the "Will it Blend" master

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; What happens to your profile when you die? The friends and family of people who have passed will now be able to contact Facebook in order to have the deceased person's profile page memorialized. Facebook will remove the person's status updates and contact info, but will leave photos, videos, profile info, and other media there for confirmed Facebook friends to see. There is also a function that lets users put memorial posts onto the wall of the dead person's profile. Branding has become very personal these days and the relationship we have with our companies is changing very fast, so I think it’s important to focus on what you shouldn’t do at work, not just branding and career strategies. I view web 2.0 technologies at the driving force that converges our professional and social lives. Who you are and how you behave outside of work can impact how you’re perceived inside of work and visa versa. The way the world works now is that you have to spend more time thinking about your actions than you did ten years ago because words spread faster and they are accessible by everyone."

Read the rest of the list here.

Twitter Users Are Now Younger on Average Than Facebook's

<a href="http://www.inquisitr.com/wp-content/facebook-old-people.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; It's one of those things that is just common sense that no one seems to realize until it is shown to them in a very plain, in your face style. Here is what Godin writes:

You've probably seen it. The fish monger sees a decline in business, so they have less money to spend on upkeep and inventory, so they keep the fish a bit longer and don't clean up as often, so of course, business declines and then they have even less money... Eventually, you have an empty, smelly fish store that's out of business.

The doctor has fewer patients so he doesn't invest as much in training or staff and so some other patients choose to leave which means that there are even fewer patients...

The newspaper has fewer advertisers, so they can't invest as much in running stories, so people stop reading it, which means advertisers have less reason to advertise which leaves less money for stories...

As Tom Peters says, "You can't shrink your way to greatness," and yet that's what so many dying businesses try to do. They hunker down and wait for things to get better, but they don't. This isn't a dip, it's a cul de sac. It's over.

Right this minute, you still have some cash, some customers, some momentum... Instead of squandering it in a long, slow, death spiral, do something else. Buy a new platform. Move. The concept of a promotion where you must give up people as friends to gain a free Whopper is really cool. The fact that people who were de-friended got a message saying that they were worth less than a tenth of a Whopper is even more hilarious. It amazes me what people will to do to get something for free. Here's a link to CNET's article on the campaign.

Seth Godin at Google

This is a talk one of my marketing heroes, Seth Godin, gave at Google. Today I wanted to bring you a fantastic how to for Squidoo (you gotta love catchy rhymes). This article comes to us courtesy of "Droopy Dawg", a member over at the Warrior Forum internet marketing discussion board. If so inclined, register and look me up (paulwaltz is my username).

Now then, I've made a few lenses in my career as an internet marketer (all 4 months of it!) for various clients, but have never created them as in depth as this article explains, despite the fact that it only takes about 15 minutes to get a lens up to this quality of perfectly keyworded (is that a real word?) content. I will definitely be optimizing my lenses with this new information and I suggest you do as well.
